10 Simple Beginner Ways to Live Green and Cut Energy Costs

Green living is changing your lifestyle to positively impact the earth and its environment. Using earth's resources wisely and efficiently has now become a necessity due to the rapid depletion of mother earth's bounty. The population explosion and over consumption has created an unsustainable earth. However, individuals can make a difference and everyone needs to do their part to conserve and preserve in order for our off springs to enjoy a functioning and sustainable earth. This is not rocket science, it is the simple everyday things we do, and even without a rigid change to our lifestyles that makes a big difference.

Here are 10 uncomplicated tasks everyone can perform to help minimize their impact on the earth and at the same time positively impacting their bottom-line and health. Remember, you do not have to make a radical change, just initiate these small changes to begin with.

1. Replace all incandescent light bulbs, yes, every single one of them with compact fluorescent bulbs. Be careful though when installing, you do not want to break any of these.

2. Unplug televisions and small appliances when not in use. Yes, they still utilize some power even when turned off.

3. Keep air conditioner thermostat on energy saving 78 degrees and on automatic. Don't forget to change filters often.

4. Do only full loads when running dishwashers and washers. Also, don't forget to clean lint trap on the dryers before every load. Wash clothes in cold water to save a bundle in energy costs.

5. Gray water can be used to water plants, i.e. wash water from bath, sink etc

6. Recycle everything that is recyclable.

7. Do not keep the faucet running whilst brushing teeth or hand washing dishes.

8. Donate used clothes and furniture instead of throwing them out. "One man's junk is another man's treasure"

9. Take your own reusable bags when shopping and whenever possible, buy goods that used recycled materials in their packaging.

10. Instead of buying Styrofoam cups and plates when picnicking, bring your own casual china. Reduce what goes into the land fills.

These are simple artless ways a beginner can embark on a mission to do his or her small part for our environment. This list is by no means exhaustive, but for those who would rather not begin with a strict change to their lifestyles or just plain hesitant; take the process one step at a time and build as you go along. Before you realize, it has become a way of life. Benefits include a healthier lifestyle, a reduction in your utility bills and of course the immeasurable benefits to our planet. The objective here is to have a sustainable earth whereby its resources will not be depleted faster than it can be replenished, and not emitting more pollutants than the earth can absorb.
